Organ Transplants
My first subject is about organ transplants. This is something that I feel quite strongly about, and here is why....
In the
mid-70s, my mother's eyesight was very poor.
The doctors said that it seemed as
though her eyes might have been damaged by chemical burns! We have no idea
how that may have happened.
We only knew that for a number of years, mom's sight had been failing, and she
could no longer do the things she loved most -- read, watch TV, sew. At
the age of 61, there wasn't a lot else that she could do.
You see, she was lame (one leg was shorter than the other - the doctors could
never diagnose the reason why - they guessed that she had had a broken
leg when very small, and it hadn't healed properly; they thought perhaps she'd
had polio) and this made it increasingly difficult for her to walk very
much. So she enjoyed less active things.
In 1975, she had corneal transplants! What a true miracle this was! She was able to see again, to read, watch TV, and sew! We were ever so grateful to the donor's family.
She lived to the age of 88, dying in 2003.
One of my sisters had a kidney transplant about 10 years ago. She is now healthy, and no longer has to be on a dialysis machine 3 times or so every week.
So our family has been blessed twice, with the generosity of strangers -- donors of organs.
Thank you!
