Poems for Adoption, Search and Reunion Page Six

History (for K.D.)

We move to a different city.
The doctor wants to know if there is any heart trouble in my family.
I tell him, "I'm adopted."
He says, "That's alright. You seem very healthy."
But dammit, it's not alright.
I'm pregnant, and I know nothing about my heredity...
When the baby moves for the first time, my husband hugs me...
Flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood....I carry my blood relative with me...
Our baby is healthy...thank God...
People ask where our child got the blue eyes. I make a joke, but...
I remember the lady in the park, the summer I was eight. A blue eyed lady smiled at me, and asked my name...
The teacher asks about our background.
It seems we are raising a talented musician...
Friends return from holidays. "Do you have a sister in Vancouver? We saw this person....she looked just like you..."
I love my parents, my husband, my child...
My life is good...
I begin my search...
